I am Learning to Make Simple Inferences.

I am in Pascal group for reading and we have been learning to make simple inferences. An inference is when you know something even though it is not actually written in the story. You can make an inference by looking for clues in the story and illustrations.

My Reflection
It was hard to write about the main character because I nearly forgot the whole entire story. I have made some inferences about the story like how Mrs McFee likes colourful things. It doesn't say it in the story, but I know that she does because she wears lots of colourful things.

I am Learning to Count to 20 in Maori.

I am in Wha group for Maths. we have been learning how to count to 20 in Te Reo Maori. Most of us learned how to count to 10 in Year 1 so we focused on numbers 11-20.

My Reflection
I am good at counting in Maori and I find it very easy to do. I learned how to count to 10 in Maori in Year 1.

I am Learning to add Detail to my Writing.

Room 8 has been learning how to add detail into our writing to make it more interesting. We can think about the questions: Who? What? Where? When? How? and Why? to help us add this detail.
We have recently started swimming again and chose this shared experience to write about.

On Friday we went swimming with the Year Twos. We did Jump Jam. We haven't been swimming in a long time. When I went in it was cold. When I was moving I felt more warm. We had free time in the water. It was a great day.

My Reflection
I think  that I did a fabulous job of my writing, but I was worried that I did not add enough detail. It can be hard to add detail because it is hard to think about them all. It is important to add detail to your writing because it tells more ideas and makes it more interesting.

I am Learning to Find and Summarise Information in texts by Skimming and Scanning.

I am in Pascal group for reading. We have been learning about skimming and scanning texts in order to find information. If you need to find certain information, it is easier and faster to skim and scan the text instead of reading the whole story.

Reading Response

Book: Picnic Weather

Name 2 Main Characters:
1. Nick
2. Anna

What was the problem?
They don't know what the weather is like so they didn't know what to wear for the school picnic.

What was the solution?
The heard the weather forecaster.

My Reflection
I think that i did a good job of skimming the text to find the problem and solution.
It is easier to skim quickly instead of reading the whole story through.
Sometimes it can be tricky to get the information because I miss things out when skimming fast.

I am Learning to Try My Best.

I participated in the Junior Cross Country. We have been practicing every Tuesday and Thursday this term. I came in 3rd place!

I am Learning to Identify 2D and 3D Shapes.

In Room 8 we have been learning about Geometry. We have looked at different 2D and 3D shapes and their different parts. We learned that shapes have different numbers of sides, faces, edges and corners of vertices.
We had a lot of fun making monsters out of different shapes!

My shape's name is Gaga because he says gaga a lot. His shape is 2D. He is a trapezoid. He likes to play around.

My Reflection
I think that I did a good job with my monster because he is very cute.
I found geometry hard because it's hard to remember all of the different names of the shapes.
The easiest part was counting the sides of 2D and 3D shapes.
I liked learning about shapes.

I am Learning to Write a Cinquain Poem.

In Room 8 we have been learning how to write a cinquain poem. These poems have a special order that the words have to be put in. We have practiced writing cinquains in our writing books and published our most recent poems on Spring.

Success Criteria:
- All words must relate to the topic.
- The second line must contain two adjectives.
- The third line must contain three verbs with an -ing ending.
- The fourth line must be a four word sentence about Spring.

Spring
Peaceful, colourful
Running, jumping, floating
Baby animals are cute
Lovely

My Reflection
It was super easy to write a cinquain poem because Miss Clegg told us the instructions.
I already knew what a verb was because I learned it in Room 1. I had not learned about adjectives before.
It was a bit tricky to spell 'lovely' and sometimes I get mixed up.
I think that my poem is fabulous and I did a great job!

I am Learning to Use Punctuation Correctly.

Last week we celebrated Matariki with a pyjama and breakfast morning at school!
It was lots of fun and gave us good ideas to write about. Our focus in writing has been on using different types of punctuation correctly.

I need to:
- Use at least two different types of punctuation.
- Use the punctuation in a way that makes my writing more interesting.
- Put the punctuation in the right places.

In the morning we went to jump jam with our pjs! After we had Matariki breakfast! I had some rice pop and some fruit and some toast. The fruit tasted like sweet candy.

My Reflection
I am proud of using exclamation marks correctly.
It can be a bit tricky to put punctuation in the correct places.
I will try my best to put the punctuation in the right places.

I am Learning to Skip Count in Twos.

I am in Wha group for Maths. We have been learning to skip count in 2s.

I need to:
- recognise the number pattern when skip counting in 2s
- be able to skip count in 2s to 100

My Reflection
I find skip counting in twos a bit hard, but I think I did a good job.
I think that I might be able to skip count in twos up to 100.
Skip counting helps us to count faster.

I am Learning to Predict and Re Predict as I Read.

I am in Pascal group for Reading, we are working at Turquoise. We have been learning to predict what will happen in a story and then re predict as we read. It is important to remember that it is okay for a prediction to be wrong!

I need to:
- Use picture information to make a guess as to what the story is about
- look for clues in the text that tell you what might happen next
- use clues from the text to make changes to my predictions

We read the story: The Hailstorm

Prediction 1:

By looking at the front cover, I think that the characters will be playing with a ball and then the sky will turn black and they will go into a shed.

Prediction 2:

After reading to page 8, I have found out that my prediction was right! I have made a new prediction about what is going to happen next. I think that the characters will open the door and look and it is still raining. They will wait in the shed until it stops.

What really happened:

After reading the whole book, I have found out that both of my predictions were right. Something also happened that I didn't predict, there came snow!

My Reflection
I am proud of  think that I looked for clues on the front cover and in the story well so that I could think about what might happen.
I will think very hard when making predictions.
It is okay for my predictions to be wrong because they are just my thoughts.

I am Learning to Try New Things

We took part in a trial soccer clinic. We learned a new game called 'Shark Attack' and played a game of soccer in a big blow up field! The message of the lesson was to try new things and give it a go even if you feel nervous.

Success Criteria:
- take part in the games
- treat peers and team mates with respect and be a good sport
- have fun!

I am Learning to Chunk Words

I am in Pascal group for reading. We have been learning how to break up words into easier to read 'chunks' to help us read new words.

I need to:
look for parts of words (chunks) that I know to help me read new words.

My Reflection

I am proud of how I could chunk the word up myself without help.
It is easy to to read them because I know the little parts.
It can be tricky to read new words.

I am Learning to Float with an Aid

Room 8 has been visiting the school pool on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. We have been learning to be safe in the water and using this time to gain confidence and to enjoy being in the water.

To be able to float in the water with an aid I must be able to:

- feel comfortable getting my face and hair wet
- use a pool noodle correctly (under my armpits)
- keep my feet off of the ground

My Reflection
I am proud of how I can swim on my tummy with the noodle.
It can be tricky to float when the noodle goes under the water.
I like being in the water when it is hot. It is fun!

I am Learning to Read a Bar Graph and Answer Questions

I am learning to read a bar graph and answer questions

I need to:
*read the question
*read the data (information) on the graph
*identify the lowest (fewest) and highest (most) bars
*read the quantities
*compare the data on the graph
*answer questions about the data (information) on the graph

My Reflection

I am proud of when I get all the questions right and when I try my best.
It can be tricky to read a bar graph when it doesn't have all of the numbers on it.
Next time I can ask someone on my table for help.

I use a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence.
I use a capital letter for the word ‘I.’
I use a capital letter for names of things.

I am learning to use full stops correctly:
I use a full stop at the end of a sentence.

My name is John. I am 6 years old. I have one sister. I have two brothers.

My Reflection

It is tricky to use capital letters and full stops. I am proud that I tried. Next time I will sound out the first letter and the last letter.

Welcome to Year 2 2018

Welcome to my Learning Journey for 2018.

I am in Year 2, Room 8 and my teacher is Miss Clegg.
